Andy was a ninth grader who regularly seemed to be living on the edge. Andy had a daring personality and generally wanted to do what his older brothers were doing. After drinking something like eight wine coolers, Andy started to feel nauseous and then threw up. When he passed out on the football field, one of his drinking pals called 911 for help. It was fortunate that the call for medical help was made because when his cronies went to the hospital to see Andy, they were told that Andy had been manifesting alcohol poisoning symptoms. More to the point, Andy had experienced an alcohol overdose.

After receiving alcohol poisoning treatment, Andy was truthfully amazed to learn that he had overdosed on alcohol because he "only" had roughly five or ten alcoholic beverages. When he stated this to the attending doctor at the hospital, conversely, the physician told Andy that drinking five or ten wine coolers over a two or three hour period of time could in reality be quite a bit more alcohol than can be metabolized by the body. The healthcare professional further emphasized how extreme amounts of alcohol can cause the brain to shut down a person's respiratory system and that when this transpires, a person can expire.

This was the first forewarning to Andy that he was drinking in a harmful fashion and that there are effects for such actions. The physician told Andy that he was a lucky individual because he almost lost his life from an alcohol overdose the previous night.

The healthcare practitioner also had a word with Andy's parents and suggested that they get alcohol counseling for Andy. His parents were thrilled that Andy was all right and told the healthcare professional that they would look into getting Andy alcohol therapy.

While speaking to his parents, Andy informed them that there must be a special reason why he did not pass away and that he felt a sense of thanksgiving that he was still alive. He also told his parents that the most ironic part about the entire drinking event was that he had learned about alcohol poisoning the previous week at school.

At the time, what his health instructor, Mr. Johnson, was teaching didn't seem to make a lot of sense to Andy. Now that he almost passed away, on the other hand, he felt that he should have listened more carefully in Mr. Johnson's health class and applied what he had learned to his life.

Andy told his parents that he couldn't wait to go to Mr. Johnson's classroom and express regret to Mr. Johnson for not displaying more attention to something that was as pertinent as learning about alcohol poisoning.
